The endothelial glycocalyx is a micro-thin, sugar-rich layer that has a hair-like resemblance and covers the apical side of vascular endothelial cells, projecting into the lumen of blood vessels. It serves as a protective barrier allowing the blood to flow without impacting the inner wall of the blood vessels. The endothelial cell glycocalyx is negatively charged and heavily hydrated, consisting of a variety of glycosaminoglycans chains such as heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate as well as lipoprotein lipase, chemokines and other blood borne proteins.
